Frequently asked questions

What is the European Accessibility Act?
The EAA (Directive 2019/882) requires private-sector digital products and services in the EU — websites, mobile apps, ecommerce, banking, transport — to meet accessibility standards from 28 June 2025. The technical baseline is WCAG 2.1 AA via the harmonised standard EN 301 549.
Does the EAA apply to my company?
Yes if you offer products or services to consumers in the EU. Microenterprises (fewer than 10 employees AND under €2M annual turnover) are exempt from the service-side requirements but may still be liable when physical products are in scope.
What does WCAG 2.1 AA cover?
WCAG 2.1 AA is the standard the EAA, US Section 508, and UK PSBAR all require. It defines 50 success criteria across four principles — perceivable, operable, understandable, robust — covering colour contrast, keyboard navigation, screen-reader semantics, form labelling, error handling, and more.
What does mandatiq scan for?
Every WCAG 2.1 AA criterion that's machine-detectable — roughly 30–40% of all WCAG issues. That includes contrast failures, missing alt text, broken keyboard focus order, form inputs without labels, and ARIA misuse. Manual review is still needed for the remainder, like whether alt text is actually meaningful.
How accurate are automated accessibility scans?
False-positive rate is very low; the trade-off is coverage — no automated tool can catch issues that require human judgment. Our scans surface the issues most likely to trigger user complaints or regulatory action.
Can mandatiq generate the EAA accessibility statement?
Yes on Solo and above. The statement is a legally-required public document declaring your conformance level, what's compliant, what isn't, and how users can report problems. We generate it from your latest scan results in the official language of each EU member state you operate in.
What's the difference between the free scan and a paid plan?
The free scan is single-page, no signup — great for spot-checking. Paid plans add multi-page crawling, scheduled scans, AI-generated fix suggestions, the EAA statement generator, team members, and (Pro+) CI/CD integration to catch regressions before they ship.
